Arab states are set to urge U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken to immediately secure a Gaza ceasefire at a gathering of foreign ministers in Amman this Saturday.
Washington is actively attempting to persuade Israel to agree to temporary pauses in hostilities to facilitate the entry of humanitarian aid.
Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan expressed during the meeting that the international community must fulfill its responsibilities in putting an end to military operations in the region, with the aim of preventing the loss of innocent civilian lives.
The day after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu disregarded Blinken’s direct warning about the potential consequences for a future peace deal, Blinken held meetings with senior Jordanian and other Arab officials in Amman.
These officials remain deeply concerned and suspicious of Israel’s intensifying conflict with Hamas.
Blinken’s initial meeting was with Lebanon’s caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati, whose country faces significant economic and political challenges and is home to Hezbollah, an Iranian-backed group with a hostile stance toward Israel.
Mikati emphasized the importance of working towards a ceasefire in Gaza and halting Israeli aggression in southern Lebanon, as reported by the Lebanese state news agency.
He also underscored Lebanon’s commitment to international legitimacy and the implementation of UN Resolution 1701, calling on the international community to exert pressure on Israel to cease its violations.
In response, Blinken emphasized his efforts to stop military operations for humanitarian reasons and address the issue of prisoners.
