Initial Absence in the UK:
Last year, Toyota announced it wouldn’t introduce the 5th-generation Prius PHEV to the U.K., citing the tough competition from SUVs.
This decision disappointed many UK consumers, leaving them unable to purchase the sought-after hybrid.
Prius Return Announcement:
However, there’s good news as the Prius is set to make a comeback in the UK market.
Despite its previous absence due to the UK’s SUV preference, Toyota has responded to the growing demand for hybrids, signaling a reversal of its decision.
Performance and Powertrain:
The new Prius comes in both hybrid and plug-in hybrid models globally, with only the plug-in hybrid powertrain available in Europe.
It features a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine coupled with a front-mounted electric motor, generating 220 hp (164 kW/223 PS).
The 13.6 kWh battery allows for an electric-only range of up to 53 miles (85 km), according to local testing standards.
Interior and Pricing Updates:
Toyota has made significant improvements to the interior, focusing on enhancing materials and technology to provide a more luxurious and comfortable experience for owners.
Despite the upgrades, the new Prius comes with a higher price tag, starting at €45,290 in Germany, which might raise concerns about its affordability relative to its size.
Market Trends and Consumer Interest:
Despite the concerns about pricing, Toyota remains confident about the demand for hybrids, supported by recent data from S&P Global, which indicates that hybrid and PHEVs accounted for 10 percent of global vehicle sales in recent months, suggesting a growing interest in electrified vehicles.
