Israel-Hamas War: Sunak convenes Cobra to discuss Israel-Gaza conflict

  • PM Sunak chairs Cobra meeting on Israel-Gaza conflict impact.
  • No discussion on raising UK’s terror threat level.
  • Concerns grow over rising anti-Semitic and anti-Muslim incidents.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak presided over a pivotal meeting of the government’s emergency committee, Cobra, focusing on the Israel-Gaza conflict’s impact on UK communities.

Notably, discussions on raising the UK’s terror threat level were conspicuously absent from the agenda.

The PM’s official spokesperson voiced deep apprehension about the surge in anti-Semitic and anti-Muslim incidents nationwide since the onset of the conflict.

Disturbing videos and images circulating on social media over the weekend raised alarm, prompting government efforts to reassure affected communities.

Downing Street specifically denounced the chant, “From the river to the sea,” used by certain pro-Palestinian demonstrators as a call for reclaiming the land between the river Jordan and the Mediterranean Sea, deeming it deeply offensive to many.

Sunak’s spokesperson urged caution in the choice of words amidst these sensitive discussions.

Following a call by Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley for greater clarity in defining extremism, Downing Street committed to reviewing potential gaps in existing legislation.

The spokesperson stressed the importance of providing front-line officers with clear guidelines while affirming that the police possessed the necessary powers to take action.
