Dutch football giants Ajax found themselves at the bottom of the Eredivisie league table for the first time in their history, following a resounding 5-2 defeat at the hands of PSV Eindhoven. The crisis at Ajax has been looming for several months, and the recent dismissal of coach Maurice Steijn only added to their woes.
Interim coach Hedwiges Maduro, who took over after Steijn’s departure, had previously overseen a disappointing 2-0 loss to Brighton & Hove Albion in the Europa League. Hopes were not high when Ajax faced PSV, and the match did not disappoint those expectations.
The game started with Ajax showing promise, with striker Brian Brobbey squandering two significant opportunities. Despite this, Branco van den Boomen managed to put Ajax ahead in the 10th minute, only for PSV’s Hirving Lozano to equalize ten minutes later. Brobbey redeemed himself, scoring in the 40th minute after a pass from captain Steven Bergwijn, giving Ajax a 2-1 lead at halftime.
However, the dynamics of the match shifted dramatically in the second half when PSV coach Peter Bosz introduced Ismael Saibari and Guus Til. This strategic move allowed PSV to dominate, with Luuk de Jong finding the net following a Lozano effort that had struck the post. Saibari added another goal, and two more from Lozano secured a convincing 5-2 victory for PSV.
This loss marked a historic low for Ajax, as it was their fifth consecutive defeat in the Eredivisie, a first in the club’s rich history. The club, once a powerhouse in Dutch football, now occupies the undesirable position at the bottom of the league table.
In contrast, league leaders PSV continue to impress, maintaining a perfect record with ten victories and 30 points, solidifying their position as the team to beat in the Eredivisie.
In other notable matches on Sunday, FC Twente managed to defeat reigning champions Feyenoord with a score of 2-1, which allowed them to ascend to third place with 25 points, ahead of Feyenoord, who currently have 23 points.
Meanwhile, in a concerning incident during the match between second-placed AZ and NEC, NEC striker Bas Dost suddenly collapsed in the final minute of the game. After receiving immediate on-pitch medical treatment, the 34-year-old former Dutch international regained consciousness and was subsequently transported to the hospital for further evaluation. The incident cast a shadow over an already dramatic day of football in the Eredivisie.
