- South Africa takes the lead in the points table with a victory.
- Pakistan’s tournament hopes in jeopardy; must win remaining matches vs. Bangladesh, New Zealand, and England.
Pakistan’s campaign in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup took another blow as they faced a penalty for a slow over-rate during their recent match against South Africa in Chennai. The “Men in Green” were found to be four overs short during South Africa’s batting innings, leading to a 20 percent fine on their match fee.
According to the ICC Code of Conduct, players face a five percent fine of their match fee for each over that isn’t bowled within the allocated time. On-field umpires Alex Wharf and Paul Reiffel, along with third umpire Richard Illingworth and fourth umpire Richard Kettleborough, issued the charge following Pakistan’s loss to South Africa. Pakistan’s captain, Babar Azam, accepted the penalty.
Pakistan’s woes continued in Chennai, marking their fourth consecutive defeat in the World Cup. With only two wins in six matches, they are now on the brink of elimination from the tournament.
In contrast, South Africa’s crucial victory propelled them to the top of the points table with an impressive net run rate of 2.032. The Proteas encountered some hurdles during their chase of 271, but Aiden Markram’s stellar performance, with a knock of 91, brought them close to victory.
Pakistan, in their pursuit of victory, relied on their pace attack in the latter stages of the match. They needed just one more wicket with 11 runs left to defend. However, Keshav Maharaj maintained his composure and held his nerve, eventually delivering the winning shot, securing the win for South Africa.
Pakistan’s remaining ICC World Cup 2023 matches include:
- October 31 – vs Bangladesh in Kolkata
- November 4 – vs New Zealand in Bengaluru (Day match)
- November 11 – vs England in Kolkata
As Pakistan looks ahead to these matches, they must regroup and find their winning form to have any chance of progressing in the tournament.
