Ramy Youssef is excited for his show “Ramy” to become the first Muslim-American sitcom show to be nominated for an Emmy. The show’s co-creator and protagonist Ramy was nominated for outstanding lead actor and outstanding directing in a comedy series. Co-star Mahershala Ali also got a nod for supporting role in his season 2.
In the series, Ramy Hassan (Youssef), a first-generation Egyptian American, is struggling alongside his American millennial ways to reconcile his cultural and religious values. The Hulu show honors the Muslim faith while laying out a host of issues concerning the religion.
Although Ramy focuses on a Muslim American family, the series found a broad audience of millennials of diverse ethnic and religious backgrounds that could relate to the frustration of the character over his romantic life, career aspirations, and overbearing parents.
