The incidents of bird strikes at domestic airports have been steadily rising and in just one year, 18 Pakistan international airlines (PIA) planes have been damaged by bird strikes.
According to PIA sources, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has not installed state-of-the-art equipment to scare away birds at any of the airports in the country. There is also the risk of a major accident.
Sources further said that from January 2020 to June, 12 incidents of bird strikes were reported, while in July, there were only 10 incidents of bird strikes from aircraft during 19 days.
Sources said that PIA planes have suffered the most due to bird strikes and a total of 18 PIA planes have been affected in a year due to bird strikes.
Sources said that the highest number of bird strikes have been reported at Karachi and Lahore airports, while birds hovering on the dirt around the airports have been the cause of collisions with planes.
The PIA’s affected planes include Boeing 777 and Airbus 320. The national airline not only had to bear the extra cost of bird strikes but also affected the flight schedule.
According to sources, the PIA had also informed the CAA of its concern over the bird strikes but no action was taken.
