Major Twitter accounts of the US were hacked in an apparent cryptocurrency scam. Billionaire Elon Musk, Bill Gates, Kanye West, Joe Biden, Barack Obama are among the prominent US personalities whose accounts were hacked. 

Twitter said its workers had been effectively attacked by hackers with access to its internal networks.

“We’re looking into what other malicious activity they may have conducted or information they may have accessed and will share more here as we have it,” said the micro-blogging site.

Temporarily Twitter took the extraordinary step of stopping at least some verified accounts from publishing messages altogether for several hours. It said it would only restore access if it was certain it could securely do so.

Publicly accessible blockchain records indicate the apparent scammers earned cryptocurrencies worth more than $100,000.

“Tough day for us at Twitter. We all feel terrible this happened,” said Chief Executive Jack Dorsey.
