Wimbledon 2023: Vondrousova stuns Pegula to reach Wimbledon semifinals

  • Vondrousova defeated No.4 seed Jessica Pegula 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.
  • She is only third woman in Open Era to defeat four seeded players.
  • She will play the second major semifinal of her career on Thursday.

Marketa Vondrousova, who had only four career main-draw wins on grass before Wimbledon, defeated No.4 seed Jessica Pegula 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 to reach the semifinals. Vondrousova will play the second major semifinal of her career on Thursday against No.1 Iga Swiatek or unseeded Elina Svitolina.

Marketa Vondrousova has defeated four seeded players in a row to reach the Wimbledon semifinals. She is only the third woman in the Open Era to do this, after Zheng Jie in 2008 and Barbora Strycova in 2019. Her previous wins were against Veronika Kudermetova, Donna Vekic, and Marie Bouzkova.

Despite being ranked 42nd in the WTA Tour, Vondrousova has a 7-7 record against top-five opponents. She has won three consecutive matches, including two victories over Ons Jabeur earlier this year. Pegula, on the other hand, has yet to win a major quarterfinal in six tries. This was a disappointing performance for her.

Marketa Vondrousova has made it to the semifinals of Wimbledon, becoming the sixth Czech woman to do so. She is also only the fifth left-handed player to reach this stage in the past 30 years.

In 2019, Vondrousova reached the final of the French Open, where she lost to Ashleigh Barty. This is her best performance at Wimbledon so far.

Vondrousova is a talented player who has the potential to go even further in this tournament. She will be a tough opponent for whoever she faces in the semifinals.
