Netflix offered a streaming release of Luther: The Fallen Sun on March 10. The feature film continues to follow John Luther, a disturbed sleuth, in his quest to solve crimes (Idris Elba). Directed by Jaime Payne from a scenario by franchise creator Neil Cross, the film marks a continuation of the fan-adored detective’s fieldwork after having a successful multi-season run on the BBC series, Luther. However the majority of Luther’s episodes begin with a crime and a victim, as is customary, and the same is true of the feature picture. Yet author Cross admitted that his initial vision for the movie’s opening had been changed.

When the movie opens, Callum Aldrich (James Bamford), a young guy who is abducted and killed by millionaire serial murderer David Robey, is the first victim we meet (Andy Serkis). While speaking to The Independent, however, Cross underlines that the initial draught had the first victim set down as a woman, until Netflix urged the writer to consider a review. “For reasons, I hesitate to explore too much, the female victims connect and alarm more deeply,” Cross explains. “So, there was a defiant part of me in the first draught of this, which was, ‘Oh fuck it – the victim is going to be a woman because that’s more frightening.”

In the past, Luther had drawn criticism for what viewers regarded to be a lopsided representation of female victims in its episodes. In this instance, Cross explains that the streamer wanted to modify the first victim and ultimately accepted it, which he now believes was the appropriate decision in hindsight. Netflix asked the user, “Do you want to think about this a bit?” at that specific time. Cross stated. “And I did reply, ‘Well, it’ll be less scary.’ I was afraid it may be. Yet in reality, they were accurate. It was no less terrifying, and after Callum’s murder, DCI Odette Raine (Cynthia Erivo) stepped up to take charge of the manhunt for the murderer.
