The Academy Award-winning studio A24 is refocusing and getting ready for a new batch of surefire successes. According to Deadline, the casting for the Kyle Mooney (Saturday Night Live)-directed catastrophe comedy Y2K has been finalized. With a brilliant cast that combined established Hollywood names with up-and-coming talent, the studio was able to sign Rachel Zegler (West Side Story), a highly sought-after Golden Globe Award winner, for the main part. Zegler will be paired with Jaeden Martell and Julian Dennison from Deadpool 2.
The notable cast will also include Billboard Music Award-winner The Kid Laroi, Mason Gooding from Scream VI, Lachlan Watson from The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Tim Heidecker from Us, Miles Robbins from Blockers, Fred Hechinger from the Fear Street Trilogy, and Alicia Silverstone from The Killing of a Sacred Deer.
According to the synopsis, Y2K might be a dark comedy along the lines of A24’s Bodies Bodies Bodies with a dash of Superbad’s youthful antics. The film will transport viewers to New Year’s Eve 1999, a momentous and dreaded night when the globe entered the unknown as we rang in the new millennium. Two high school pals (Martell and Dennison), caught up in the millennium craze, crash the biggest party in their community to ring in the new year with their classmates. Yet as the evening goes on and the young adults’ wildest expectations are dramatically exceeded, things spiral out of control.
Despite an excellent roster of performers, Zegler’s name will likely be what draws in potential audiences for Y2K. Since she mamboed and cha-cha-ed her way onto the scene in late 2021 with Steven Spielberg’s feature-length rendition of the iconic musical West Side Story, the actress hasn’t slowed down one bit.
Zegler has only continued her career in an upward trajectory, most recently appearing in her follow-up title, Shazam! Fury of the Gods, feeling an outpouring of love from the reviewers and a newly discovered audience. Fans of The Hunger Games will soon be able to recognize Zegler in the prequel movie, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, after she volunteered to join another franchise. In addition, she will make an appearance in Disney’s most recent live-action Snow White adaption and will contribute to the computer-animated fantasy musical drama captivated on Apple TV+.
With Strong Baby’s Jonah Hill, Matt Dines, and Ali Goodwin as producers, Y2script K’s was written by Evan Winter, and The Bear’s Christopher Storer will also be involved through his American Light & Fixture production company. Together with handling financing and marketing, A24 will also manufacture.
