Hawkwind co-founder Mick Slattery dies aged 77

  • Mick Slattery, the first guitarist for Hawkwind, passed away at the age of 77.
  • He also played in the band Hawkestrel with bassist Alan Davey.
  • He played with John Harrison and Terry Ollis in the band Famous Cure.

Following a brief illness, the iconic space rock band’s co-founding member passed away “peacefully at home” on March 17.

He played with John Harrison and Terry Ollis in the band Famous Cure, which they co-founded in 1969 under the name Group X. His 81-year-old bandmate Dave Brock paid him a moving tribute on Facebook, writing: “Me and Mick played together in a band called Famous Cure in 1967, touring Holland before going on to form Hawkwind in 1969.

“I have lots of fond memories from our younger days, playing together in Holland and hanging out in Richmond at the L’Auberge Cafe and Eel Pie Island. In the late 60s, we used to rehearse in my upstairs flat in Putney and also in the basement of Bob Kerr’s music shop in Gwalior Road, playing loud music, much to the annoyance of our neighbours. Fly free old friend.”

The musician briefly performed with Hawkwind before departing the group the same year they were founded and being replaced by Huw Lloyd-Langton.

He can be heard on the Pink Floyd song “Cymbaline” as well as the demos “Hurry On Sunset,” “Bring It On Home,” “Kiss of the Velvet Whip,” and others.

He later recorded, nevertheless, with Space Ritual, the late saxophone and flautist Nik Turner’s group.

He also played in the band Hawkestrel with bassist Alan Davey.

Nik sadly passed away just four months ago at the age of 82.
