Following his disclosure that his eldest son Nicholas is “critically ill” with stomach cancer, Andrew Lloyd Webber has remained by his son’s side.
The renowned composer and impresario, 74, expressed his “total devastation” over his son Nicholas Lloyd Webber, 43, receiving a cancer diagnosis in a statement on Saturday.
“As my friends and family know, he has been fighting gastric cancer for the previous 18 months and Nick is now hospitalized,” Webber wrote. Since I was unable to attend the recent previews of Bad Cinderella, I will also be unable to support the show’s excellent cast, staff, and orchestra on opening night this Thursday.
Webber continued, “We’re all hoping Nick will turn the corner. “My place is with him and the family right now, but he is valiantly fighting with his indomitable humor.”
Nicholas, a Grammy-nominated composer, has scored notable works like the movies The Last Bus and Mr. Invisible in addition to the BBC One series Love, Lies, and Records. After composing the original cast CD for Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cinderella in 2021, he was nominated for a Grammy.
The son of Webber Hugill, who was married to Sarah Hugill from 1971 until 1983, has been blazing his own trail for a while now. Nicholas witnessed The Little Prince’s musical adaption being presented at the Lyric Belfast in 2011 and 2012. He admitted that he was “extremely apprehensive” at the moment and that he knew there would be some “attention” paid to him. Nonetheless, he said, “I would like to think that the show will be assessed on its own merits. Everyone can only hope for that, right?
In 2011, he admitted to The Times, “For a long time, I dropped the Lloyd bit – to see what the reaction would be. “I heard some information on the radio and realized that I wasn’t a complete moron. Then I reasoned, “Hold on, maybe I should just get started with it. If other individuals are willing to work with me without the surname.”
As for his father, Bad Cinderella’s opening night is slated for Thursday at the Imperial Theatre on Broadway. The play follows the titular character as she sets out to “build her own happily ever after,” according to New York Theater Guide, and is Webber’s first Broadway show since School of Rock closed in 2019.
It had its London premiere as Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cinderella, and the updated version started performing on Broadway in February before going on stage on March 23. The titular part is played by Linedy Genao, who previously performed on Broadway in On Your Feet! and was an understudy in Dear Evan Hansen.
With a book by Academy Award winner Emerald Fennell and lyrics by Tony and Olivier Award winner David Zippel, Webber, of course, handled the music. Under Laurence Connor’s supervision, JoAnn M. Hunter creates the choreography. The Tony Award-winning composer’s work on shows like Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita, Cats, and The Phantom of the Opera is arguably what makes him most well-known.
“I’m overjoyed that we will be performing Bad Cinderella at the Imperial Theatre. For our Broadway premiere, we have been working extremely hard on a few brand-new songs, led by the great Linedy. I have no doubt that this will be extremely fantastic.” Back then, Lloyd Webber made a remark.
a snarky comment. “This modern retelling of the classic fairy tale takes place in the wonderfully beautiful kingdom of Belleville. Our Cinderella is no longer the helpless victim in need of rescue. Her new circumstance makes her and her prince rethink what “happily ever after” really entails.”
