Prince William hopes troops to be able to combat poachers in Africa

  • He has spent many years combating the illegal wildlife trade, and in 2014.
  • Princess Catherine was the new Colonel of the Irish Guard and took the salute during the march-past.
  • Prince William told the troops that he may be stepping aside, but they have a committed, focused.

Prince William hopes that young troops will have the opportunity to participate in anti-poaching missions in Africa.

Following the St Patrick’s Day Parade, the heir to the throne was enjoying a pint of Guinness with soldiers from the Irish Guards in Aldershot today.

He told a table of troops: “I hope some of you can get out on the counter-poaching stuff in Africa. It’s a new gig. You do a lot. Full training, operational stuff, a really good experience.”

Irish Guardsmen from Number One and Number Two Companies have recently returned from deployments to East Africa on Security Force Assistance missions, including training park rangers in anti-poaching techniques.

Prince William has spent many years combating the illegal wildlife trade, and in 2014, he co-founded United for Wildlife with The Royal Foundation.

By bringing together various groups, the organisation hopes to make it impossible for traffickers to transport, finance, or profit from illegal wildlife products.

Tusk, a wildlife conservation charity, was one of his first Patronages in 2005.

The charity’s Chief Executive, Charlie Mayhew MBE, previously said: “Prince William’s support for Tusk over the years has been immensely helpful in raising both the profile of the charity and the funds that we need. His ability to draw global attention to the plight of endangered species being decimated by illegal wildlife trade has been warmly welcomed by conservationists across the globe and we are enormously grateful to him”.

The Prince and Princess of Wales attended the St. Patrick’s Day Parade at Mons Barracks in Aldershot.

Princess Catherine was the new Colonel of the Irish Guard and took the salute during the march-past.

She informed the regiment: “I couldn’t be more proud to be standing in front of you today. It truly is an honour to serve as your Colonel. I am here to listen to you, to support you, and to champion you in everything you do – this is a responsibility I take seriously.”

Outgoing Colonel Prince William told the troops, “I may be stepping aside, but you have a committed, focused, and already incredibly loyal 11th Colonel in Colonel Catherine.”
