Canadians confused on supporting royal family?

  • Canadians are divided over the monarchy’s future role.
  • 56% believing the country should “reconsider its ties” to the monarchy.
  • 71% believing there should be some constitutional soul-searching.

According to a recent poll, Canadians are divided over the monarchy’s future role ahead of King Charles III’s coronation.

The 74-year-old monarch’s coronation is less than two months away, and the population is divided on whether it’s time to break connections with the Queen, according to a new survey.

According to a Leger poll of 1,544 Canadians, 56% believe the country should “reconsider its ties” to the monarchy now that there is a new sovereign. According to the CBC, this figure was higher in Quebec, where 71% of respondents believed there should be some constitutional soul-searching concerning the Crown.

Voters in Ontario (53%) and British Columbia (52%), more than any other area, believe King Charles and his heirs should keep their existing role in our system.

Barbados ended its affiliation with the monarchy and became a republic in 2021, giving encouragement to anti-royalists in other Commonwealth states.

Such kind of shift couldn’t happen in Canada since Charles has extensive links to the nation, developing friendships with certain Canadians via his humanitarian work and outreach during his many trips.

The Canadian Constitution requires unanimity on the issue – the House of Commons, Senate, and all ten provinces must all agree on a new system.

Nonetheless, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has stated that he has no desire for a lengthy constitutional debate. Whether he is liked or despised, King Charles is likely to remain as the country’s ruler.
