  • Shaheen moved up in the batting order once more.
  • Shaheen batted at number five in a crucial qualifier match in Lahore.

During Wednesday’s crucial match against Multan Sultans, former Test cricketer Waqar Younis criticized Lahore Qalandars skipper Shaheen Shah Afridi’s decision to promote himself to batting.

After putting Qalandars on track to score 161 runs, Sultans bowled them out for just 79 runs.

In this year’s Pakistan Super League (PSL), Shaheen moved up in the batting order once more. Shaheen, a tail-ender, batted at number five in a crucial qualifier match in Lahore when Qalandars were already struggling with a score of 19-3.

Waqar referred to Shaheen’s decision as “wrong” during commentary.

The cricketer-turned-commentator stated, “It’s totally a wrong decision to promote yourself in batting when you already have proper batters left.” It’s like giving someone other than Shaheen a new ball. Then, how will he feel? You can’t make such a decision in a big game like this, I think Sikandar Raza and others were there to bat,” he added.

With two balls, Shaheen went out for a duck. After Shaheen’s defeat, Qalandars were four runs behind. The reigning champs were bowled out for only 79 runs which pushed them to challenge in eliminator 2, planned on Walk 17 at a similar scene.

On March 16, Islamabad United and Peshawar Zalmi will meet in the first eliminator.

In the meantime, Mohammad Rizwan’s Sultans will rest for three days before playing in their third consecutive PSL final.
