Former prime minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan has welcomed the normalization of diplomatic relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran.
Taking to Twitter, the former premier shared a news story regarding the restoration of diplomatic relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran, welcoming the development.
Imran Khan noted that his government had taken an initiative to bring Iran and Saudi Arabia together for dialogue “as part of our policy of wider engagement for peace and unity of the Ummah”. He also appreciated China’s role in the diplomatic breakthrough.
Iran and Saudi Arabia agreed to re-establish relations after seven years of hostility after reaching an agreement in Beijing. According to a joint statement, Tehran and Riyadh agreed to resume diplomatic relations and re-open embassies within two months.
The agreement was reached between Ali Shamkhani, secretary of the Supreme National Security Council of Iran, with Saudi national security adviser Musaad bin Mohammed al-Aiban and Wang Yi, China’s most senior diplomat.

Pakistan welcomes agreement
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also welcomed the signing of the historic agreement between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Iran for the resumption of diplomatic ties.
On his Twitter handle, the prime minister said the “China-mediated deal augurs well for peace, stability, and economic development in the Middle East and Muslim world”. He further observed it showed that with collective wisdom, win-win outcomes were possible.
Pakistan has also welcomed the normalization of diplomatic relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran after talks brokered by China.
The Foreign Office spokesperson in a statement said Pakistan firmly believes that this important diplomatic breakthrough will contribute to peace and stability in the region and beyond.
“We commend the role played by China’s visionary leadership in coordinating this historic agreement which reflects the power of constructive engagement and meaningful dialogue,” the statement said.The spokesperson lauded the “sagacious” leadership of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Islamic Republic of Iran for this “very positive development.”
“With a history of consistently supporting and coordinating efforts for bridging gaps between the two brotherly countries, Pakistan will continue to play a constructive role in the Middle East and the region.
The spokesperson hoped this positive step would define a template for regional cooperation and harmony.
