Moviegoers are getting more and more excited for John Wick: Chapter 4, the latest installment in Lionsgate’s action-thriller series. As Variety has reported, John Wick: Chapter 4 will premiere at the SXSW Film Festival in Austin, Texas, giving fans the chance to see the fourth film in the series early.
The movie will be shown at the 2019 festival, which will take place from March 10 to March 19, according to sources who spoke to Variety. In an effort to protect the cinematic experience, neither Lionsgate nor SXSW commented on the screening. It is known, though, that John Wick: Chapter 4 will be this year’s SXSW “secret screening”—a movie that isn’t included in the festival’s official schedule in order to create discussion and excitement about the project.
Although it is unknown how many tickets will be made available for the screening, reports claim that some form of internet marketing will be used in the process. Keanu Reeves, the movie’s star, and Chad Stahelski, its director, are both expected to attend. According to Collider editor-in-chief Steve Weintraub, he is “95% sure they will be there to present the movie or do a Q&A after.”
The secret screening of John Wick: Chapter 4 has certainly served as a marketing tool for the picture, but it has also raised a lot of interest on its own. According to a summary, Reeves will return to the screen as the titular John Wick, who “in the upcoming fourth episode of the series, faces his deadliest opponents yet. As the price on his head rises, Wick expands the scope of his battle with the High Table by going for the most influential criminals in cities like New York, Paris, Osaka, and Berlin.”
Many characters from the previous movies will make appearances in this one, including Laurence Fishburne, Ian McShane, and Lance Reddick. Donnie Yen and Bill Skarsgrd are two new A-list actors who have joined the cast. Along with Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee, director Stahelski is also a producer.
Although John Wick: Chapter 4 had its world debut in London at the beginning of March, the SXSW screening will be the movie’s first showing in the United States. The John Wick series has previously made close to $600 million at the box office, and the fourth chapter is presently tracking to make a domestic launch of between $60 and $70 million, which would be the franchise’s strongest start to date. Lionsgate has a history of releasing blockbuster movies at SXSW; just last year’s festival saw the world debut of Tom Gormican’s action comedy The Unbearable Weight of Enormous Talent, which starred Pedro Pascal and Nicolas Cage in a fictionalized version of themselves.
Many people have given John Wick: Chapter 4 high marks in early reviews, with some even claiming it to be the finest in the series. The movie, according to Weintraub, is “f**king great,” and he also said that he “had to pick my jaw off the floor” due to some of the crazy and creative set pieces. Therese Lacson, the features editor for Collider, agreed, calling the movie “an action-packed, bloody, kill-fest, and that’s what makes it good!”
