Lt Gen (retd) Nazir Ahmad appointed NAB chairman

  • Lt Gen retired Nazir Ahmad has been appointed as NAB chairman
  • PM Office has issued a notification
  • The post was vacant after resignation of Aftab Sultan

ISLAMABAD: The federal government appointed Lt Gen retired Nazir Ahmad as chairman of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).

A notification has been issued in this regard stating that the prime minister made the appointment in consultation with the Leader of Opposition.

“In terms of Section 6 of the National Accountability Ordinance, 1999 (XVIII of 1999), as amended from time to time, consultation between the Leader of the House being the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly has been made and there is a consensus on the name of Lt. Gen (Retd.) Nazir Ahmad, for his appointment by the Federal Government as Chairman, National Accountability Bureau (NAB),” the notification released by Prime Minister’s Office read.

The post has vacant after the sudden resignation of Aftab Sultan from the post after just even months. Sultan cited “interference” and “pressure” as the reasons for his departure. NAB Deputy Director Zahir Shah was appointed as the interim chairman after Sultan’s resignation.

The PTI objected to the appointment of the new NAB chairman. PTI Senior Vice Chairman Fawad Chaudhry said they have no objection to Lt Gen (retd) Nazir Ahmad’s name but the process is “controversial”.

He said the court has suspended the acceptance of resignations by PTI MNAs and the party has nominated Shah Mahmood Qureshi as the Leader of Opposition in National Assembly.

He said Qureshi is the legitimate opposition leader and the process of consultation has not been done.  He said the appointment of NAB Chairman is controversial. “The consultation process was not carried out legally [speaking],” he said.

PTI Chief Whip Aamir Dogar had written a letter to National Assembly Speaker Raja Pervaiz Ashraf and asked him to initiate the process for changing the opposition leader as the Lahore High Court suspended the de-notification of PTI MNAs.

Dogar said the new opposition leader should be from PTI who would carry out consultation with the Leader of the House for the appointment of the new NAB chief.
