Hilary Duff is open about why she began singing after beginning her acting career. Duff discussed switching to music in a new interview on Josh Peck’s Good Guys podcast with her How I Met Your Father co-star Josh Peck. Duff said she “didn’t want to” be so strongly identified with Lizzie McGuire, the popular Disney Channel series that made her famous.

“I wanted to start singing at the time, but [Disney] wasn’t really on board. Hollywood Records initially turned us down since they didn’t want to sign me right away; nonetheless, since that was our first choice, “The 35-year-old celebrity revealed that father-and-son record label executives Rob and Bob Cavallo later exhibited an interest in her singing career.

In August 2003, less than a year after Lizzie McGuire ended, Duff released her breakthrough album Metamorphosis, which featured the smash song “Come Clean.” “They came on board, and then I started producing a record,” she added. “So, they didn’t just say, “Let’s juice this for all we can.” It was my concept. I had a singing itch. I genuinely wanted to stop being Lizzie McGuire.”

She recalled feeling like people only knew her as the role in that time period. “People used to always say, ‘Lizzie, Lizzie, Lizzie,’ and they still do now, which doesn’t upset me as much as it used to, but it did for a time,” said Duff. “I just needed to be myself so badly, and I believe I thought that music would be a nice way to reintroduce myself, and it was.”

The “With Love” singer, however, continued to feel that many of her fans weren’t ready for her to mature past the young adolescent they had come to know on television.

Duff stated, “I would say that was five years of my life, just trying to navigate becoming the person that I wanted to be outside of who everyone else expected me to be. “When I was on tour, mothers would approach me and say, “Never change! Never, never, never alter in anything you do!”

She frequently felt hurt by such remarks, yet she continued to work on maturing.

“After a meet-and-greet, I would enter my dressing room and just be like, “What?” Can you image telling a 17-year-old or an 18-year-old to never change? They most likely didn’t mean any harm “Duff continued. I did want to change since I was an angsty adolescent with a lot on my shoulders.

Duff followed up Metamorphosis with 2004’s self-titled album, 2005’s Most Wanted, and 2007’s Dignity before taking a break from music. Metamorphosis peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and sold over three million copies in the United States. Breathe In. Breathe Out., her follow-up album from 2015, peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard 200.

Duff discussed the possibility of releasing another album in the future in other parts of the conversation.

“I didn’t complete it in under a minute. I really do. I frequently get asked this question, and since I share a home with my husband, a very accomplished musician, they invariably reply, “Well, what would be so hard? Put your children to bed and head to the studio, for example. Build a booth inside your house “suggested the Younger star, who is wed to Matthew Koma, a producer.

Duff, who is married to Koma, 35, and has three children total—a son named Luca and two daughters named Banks and Mae—continued, “I currently hardly have enough time to devote to my three children, whom I chose to have. I, therefore, find it difficult to comprehend spending more time away from them.”

Yet, music lovers shouldn’t give up on new music. I definitely think I have more to do in that department, and I miss that version of myself, she remarked. Just when I’m not sure.
