ISLAMABAD: Former attorney general Anwar Mansoor Khan has written a letter to the chief justice of Pakistan asking him to take action against Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) Senior Vice President Maryam Nawaz for debasing senior judges in public.

Anwar Mansoor said he wanted to apprise the chief justice about Maryam Nawaz’s speech in Sargodha on February 23. She spoke against the honourable judges and Supreme Court under a campaign in the Sargodha public gathering and incited people.

“She levelled baseless allegations against the hourable judges and top court without any proof,” he said adding that she subjected Justice Ijaz ul Ahsan and Justice Mazahir Akbar Naqvi to criticism in the suo moto reference regarding elections in provincial assemblies.

The former attorney general said purpose behind lambasting the judges was to influence the process of justice and create hurdles in it. He said such a harsh criticism was considered to be an attack on the freedom of judiciary and justice system.

“A contempt of court proceeding should be implemented against Maryam Nawaz in this regard,” he said reminding that Justice Ijaz and Justice Mazahir had been the part of the bench that announced historic verdict against PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif in the Panama Leaks case.

Anwar Mansoor Khan said such a language should not be used against the judiciary sans a solid point or evidence. “It is hoped that the honorable court will act keeping in mind the supremacy of the constitution, the protection of the dignity and independence of the judiciary,” said Anwar Mansoor Khan.
