Nigel Farage has hit out at the decision to involve the King in “overtly political” Brexit discussions.
In a video posted to Twitter, the ex-Brexit Party leader said the move will put a “enormous strain” on the King as Sunak looks to break the Stormont deadlock.
He said: “The unelected Ursula von der Leyen is making her way to Windsor. Yes, Windsor has been chosen, it’s going to be known as the ‘Windsor Agreement’ and guess what? the King is going to meet her this afternoon.
“I think this is absolutely disgraceful of Rishi Sunak to ask the King to get involved with something that is overtly political in every way.”
Farage believes that the King is taking a risk by becoming involved in the agreement, which may prove unpopular among Unionists.
If the DUP is dissatisfied with the deal, they have pledged to continue their ongoing strike from the Stormont Assembly, which will enrage hardline Eurosceptics in Parliament.
“I wonder if the King is taking a very big risk with the section of the electorate, the section of this country that actually are his biggest supporters,” the GB News presenter pondered.
“The Unionists like the monarchy, and they want to like King Charles; this will put a huge strain on him.”
Rishi Sunak’s premiership will be put to the ultimate test when he meets with Ursula von der Leyen to negotiate a post-Brexit trade deal for Northern Ireland.
The Prime Minister is determined to meet the demands of the DUP, despite the fact that failure would have far-reaching consequences within his own party.
Conservative MP Jacob Rees-Mogg discussed the prospect of a Tory revolt with GB News.
“It will all depend on the DUP,” he told Eamonn and Isabel. If the DUP opposes it, I believe a sizable number of Conservatives will be dissatisfied.”
He said that the position of Boris Johnson, who he described as the “biggest figure in UK politics”, will be “fundamental”.
The former Cabinet minister also warned against including King Charles in Brexit talks, saying it sounded like “bouncing people”.
“I believe the sovereign should be involved only when things are completed and agreed upon,” he said.
“His Majesty should not be involved until this agreement is fully supported.”
The EU chief is expected to finalise a new agreement with the United Kingdom on trade barriers relating to Northern Ireland.
Rishi Sunak will hold a virtual Cabinet meeting with top ministers before addressing voters in a joint press conference.
The European Research Group (ERG) of Tory Brexiteers will then meet to scrutinise the bill before deciding whether to support it.
Boris Johnson agreed to the Northern Ireland Protocol in 2020 in order to avoid a hard border with Ireland after Brexit.
Northern Ireland continues to follow EU rules on goods in order to avoid border checks with the Republic.
Unionists have been outraged by the trade barriers erected as a result of the agreement, which has hampered trade between Northern Ireland and the United Kingdom.
