Jail Bahro Tehreek: 105 PTI workers, leaders arrested in Gujranwala

  • PTI started the fifth phase of Jail Bahro Tehreek in Gujranwala
  • 105 activists including party leader were arrested
  • A protest was held outside the Central Jail Gujranwal

GUJRANWALA: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) started the fifth phase of the ‘Jail Bahro’ Tehreek on Sunday as party leaders and activists volunteered to court arrest in Gujranwala.

According to reports, around 105 party workers including leaders were arrested by police as they surrendered themselves. A large number of party workers, including women and children, held a protest and raised slogans against the government. They also climbed prisons van but the police did not arrest them.

PTI workers led by the PTI Central Punjab President Dr. Yasmin Rashid reached the Central Jail in the form of a rally from the residence of the PTI City President,

Former Federal Minister Nazar Gondal, Ex-MPA Zafarullah Cheema, Ex-MPA Tahar Hindley, Hassan Yusuf, Dr. Aamir, Rizwan Mustafa, Bano Akram, and Secretary Information District Fayyaz Khokhar were also present.

Around 105 activists, including Chaudhry Liaquat, were arrested by the police. The party workers raised slogans in favor of Imran Khan and against the government.

They boarded the prisons vans with to volunteer their arrests but police refused to the locks. Eventually, police brought five prison man and arrested them. The party activists have been shifted to an unknown location.

Security arrangements were also made and the main gate of the central jail locked by police. Several PTI leaders and members left the Central Jail after presenting their arrests.

Earlier today, PTI Senior Vice President Fawad Chaudhry said that the party leaders and workers will offer their arrests in Gujranwala after Peshawar and Multan police refused to detain party members.

Taking on Twitter, Fawad wrote: “PTI leaders and workers will present themselves for arrests in Gujranwala today, Police in Peshawar and Multan refused to arrest Tehreek-e-Insaf workers.” He said than 200 workers in Lahore and Rawalpindi are currently in various jails and have refused to submit bail requests.

The court arrest movement was launched on February 22 from Lahore. The party’s senior leaders, including Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Asad Umar and Azam Swati, alongside other party workers, voluntarily surrendered themselves to on the first day of the campaign.

The movement subsequently reached Peshawar, Rawalpindi and Multan. The movement is expected to reach Karachi later this week.

PTI Chairman Imran Khan had strongly condemned the “fascist approach” of the government for treating his party’s workers and leaders detained during the court arrest drive like terrorists.

Imran Khan claimed that his party’s leadership and workers are protesting against fascism, the violation of fundamental rights, and the crushing of the nation.
