Son detained without bail after killing his father

  • Tony Thomas, 46, was found guilty of manslaughter.
  • Due to diminished responsibility for killing his father.
  • After experiencing a psychotic break.

A guy who killed his father by stamping on him outside of his home after experiencing a psychotic break has been hospitalized and incarcerated indefinitely.

In March 2021, Tony Thomas, 46, attacked Dafydd Thomas, 65, near Porthmadog in Gwynedd, and he died as a result.

Thomas had a long history of mental health concerns, and the jury found him guilty of manslaughter due to diminished responsibility.

The judge at Caernarfon Crown Court said the “dreadful nature” of the attack had taken the life of a “remarkable man”.

Thomas’s obsession with the pigs he raised on property he shared with his parents was brought up in court during his January trial.

Thomas was concerned that his father’s desire to introduce some new animals to the farm might result in the spread of disease to his own pigs.

The prosecution claimed that this served as a “trigger” for the assault.

Thomas testified during his trial that after viewing an email with information about a formal warning for transporting animals, he felt “overwhelmed with wrath, like a fuse blowing in his head.”

He attacked his father and pulled him out of a pick-up truck, kicked him, then threw him to the ground and stamped on his skull.

After being discovered by his wife Elizabeth, Mr. Thomas passed away at the scene from “catastrophic injuries” to his face.

Although medical evidence indicated Thomas had schizoaffective disorder when he attacked his father, a murder allegation against him was withdrawn during his trial at Mold Crown Court.

Schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder both have comparable symptoms.

In addition, the court was informed that he had previously been given a bipolar diagnosis, had stopped taking his medicine for more than two years, and had previously been admitted to multiple mental hospitals.

Mr. Thomas’s daughter Elin read a victim impact statement about her father’s death, telling the court that “the sense of anger we feel as a family is immeasurable”.

“He will never get to walk me down the aisle,” she told the court.

Mr. Thomas, who had established a prosperous trash management company, had just lately retired.

He was a well-known charity fundraiser who loved extreme sports like skydiving and mountaineering.

“We were a close family. I can’t describe the loss we all feel that we don’t get to se him every day.

“It’s a void that will never be filled,” added Ms. Thomas.

Judge Rhys Rowlands said it was clear Mr. Thomas was a “remarkable man who loss was clearly keenly felt” – not just by family and friends but by the whole community.

As he handed down Thomas’ sentence, Judge Rowlands stated that he agreed with the findings of the four psychiatrists who had evaluated the defendant.

He claimed that Thomas was still a “serious offender,” but that his acts were motivated by a treatable mental disorder.

He also issued an indefinite restriction order and an immediate hospital order.

It implies that Thomas won’t be freed until the justice secretary has evaluated his case and is convinced that Thomas no longer constitutes a threat to the public.
