The Emmy-winning creator Tyler Perry has announced his upcoming project as part of his enormous overall contract with Netflix. After agreeing to work on the World War II thriller Six Triple Eight late last year, the multihyphenate will direct, write, and produce the crime drama Mea Culpa, which will officially be his fifth film with the streamer. Kelly Rowland, a member of Destiny’s Child, will play the thrilling lead in Perry’s most recent movie.

Mea Culpa will follow a criminal defence lawyer as she pursues the big-ticket case that will eventually get her a partner position. She is given the difficult responsibility of defending a sketchy artist who may or may not have killed his fiancée in order to protect her future. Rowland will play the lawyer in a cast that also includes Trevante Rhodes from the movie Moonlight, in addition to Sean Sagar, Nick Sagar, and RonReaco Lee. Together with Perry, Angi Bones, and Will Areu, Rowland will serve as co-producer of the movie.

Rowland and Perry will work together for the first time on this movie, though Rowland has had her share of screen time. With roles in movies like Think Like A Man, Bad Hair, The Curse of Bridge Hollow, and Freddy vs. Jason, among others, the four-time Grammy winner has successfully transitioned from singing to acting. She most recently co-starred with Queen Latifah in Season 3 of The Equalizer and appeared in Fantasy Football for Paramount+. She also produced both Chasing Destiny and the Happy Little Christmas movies, thus Mea Culpa won’t be her first producing role.

Perry and Netflix Continue Their Relationship with Mea Culpa

Because to his enormous overall deal with the company, Perry and Netflix have established a very fruitful working partnership. Prior to Mea Culpa and Six Triple Eight, he directed A Fall from Grace, A Jazzman’s Blues, and last year’s A Madea Homecoming, which marked the triumphant return of his legendary Madea character.

In general, Perry has maintained a consistent presence in both television and film for years now thanks to his 12 Madea movies and other big-screen endeavours, as well as his numerous television appearances, including his guest role in Gone Girl and recent seasons of All the Queen’s Men, Ruthless, and Ruthless. Because of Perry’s extensive history of work in television and advocacy for diversity on set, he even received the Governor’s Award at the 2020 Emmys.
