The Power Rangers in the form of cigarettes. Quentin Dupieux, a French filmmaker, has just responded to that bold, peculiar query in his most recent work, Smoking Causes Coughing (or Fumer Fait Tousser). Additionally, a brand-new trailer for the movie has dropped ahead of its March 31 release in the United States, offering us a hilarious fresh look at the slapstick superhero comedy.

Smoking Effects Coughing chronicles the exploits of the Tobacco Force, a band of heroes. The group is made up of Gilles Lellouche as Benzene, Anas Demoustier as Nicotine, Vincent Lacoste as Methanol, Jean-Pascal Zadi as Mercury, and Gilles Lellouche as Ammonia (Oulaya Amamra). The task force is despatched to a remote retreat after a humiliating loss against a huge turtle so that they can reassemble stronger and more resilient. And it appears that the gang is benefiting from the peaceful pleasures of camping—that is, until Lézardin, the Emperor of Evil, decides to wipe out the planet Earth. To confront evil and recover from their recent humiliation, the Tobacco Force must unite.

We get a preview of the upcoming movie in the new Smoking Causes Coughing trailer. The group’s comic-fighting prowess against the enormous turtle is featured early in the trailer. The task force engages in a fight sequence right out of a 1990s VHS, with each member contributing to the defeat of the adversary. The turtle, however, soon bursts in their faces and the faces of any curious bystanders. Following the intense combat, the squad is ordered to flee, and hilarious mischief takes place.

The movie has incredibly positive reviews, including one from John Waters who calls it a “superhero movie for fools!” And the King of Filth himself is the best person to ask. In a piece he wrote for ArtForum, he said that the movie is among the greatest of the year.

Smoking Effects Quentin Dupieux, who previously worked on films like the ludicrous 2010 feature Rubber, which tells the tale of a deadly tyre, directed Coughing. Yeah, you read that right—a homicidal tyre is the subject of a movie. Dupieux is also well-known as Mr. Oizo, a DJ and musician in France. In 2020, he also helmed the movie Mandibles. Smoking Causes Coughing was written and directed by Dupieux as well.
