Rihanna faces backlash for wearing $1 million ring at Super Bowl show

  • Rihanna’s 2023 Super Bowl Halftime Show performance is still making the rounds.
  • She was criticised on Twitter for donning a $1 million Burmese ruby ring.
  • Rihanna’s ring costs $1 million.

Even after a few days have passed, news about Rihanna’s 2023 Super Bowl Halftime Show performance is still making the rounds. After an absence of six years, the superstar took the stage once more, leaving watchers and fans giddy with anticipation for her performance.

This time, however, it is not her performance that has generated much buzz online, but rather an accessory to her attire.

Rihanna was criticised on Twitter by the advocacy group Justice for Myanmar for donning a $1 million Burmese ruby ring.

The beautiful stones and rubies found in Myanmar are famous all over the world. Yet, their trade also contributes to the country’s military junta government, which commits crimes on its common citizens.

The activist group thus urged Rihanna to call for a ban on the trade of these jewels from Myanmar. The tweet read, “.@rihanna [should] stand with the [people] of #Myanmar & support a gems ban, after wearing a $1 million Burmese ruby ring at #SuperBowl The ring is from NYC’s Bayco Jewels, which has at least 9 items on their site featuring Myanmar gems fund junta atrocities. Ban the trade!”

A rare natural, unheated 19.47-carat sugarloaf cabochon Burma ruby and 5.66-carats of trillion-cut and round-brilliant colourless diamonds set in platinum and 18kt yellow gold were also mentioned as being part of Rihanna’s $1 million ring.
