Being asked to apologize for her age is getting old for Helena Bonham Carter. The British actress said this week on BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour, “It’s all about thou must not age. Every single magazine, Instagram, whatever.” “Ageing is a derogatory term. We are all completely fixated on it; it’s almost unhealthy. Because of the shame, it’s nearly a crime.”
She believes she has passed her “prime” age of 56 and would never want to go back to her youth.
“It would be great if we could change our societal rules and say, ‘Come on, we’re in our prime in our 60s: We’ve got everything and we’re coming into our power,’ “she said. “At the end of the day, you can get really obsessed. We can’t actually control what we look like, but we think we can, and in fact there’s so much else we should worry about.”
Living in the moment is what Bonham Carter prefers. She admitted that she was “certainly the cliché” who claimed she was “far happier than I was when I was younger.” “I don’t want to go back there ever again.”
I may not be as strictly aesthetically lovely on the outside, but I think it makes me more interesting and dynamic on the inside.
She portrays the Crossroads star who was fired from the serial opera in her early 60s and currently plays the lead part in the ITV drama Nolly.
She is grateful that thanks to streaming platforms, there are more jobs available for older women. According to Bonham Carter, “so far, so good,” she told BBC. I was thinking, “God, I’m so lucky at my age to get this part,” because Nolly is, quite simply, one of the nicest parts I’ve ever been offered.
She went on, “Then I had the painful realization that I even had to apologize for my age. It’s improving, it really is improving. It’s the age of television, after all, and I believe things are improving for everyone as a result of the abundance of streaming services. These items are being produced.”
