As a result of Rebecca Stokell’s injury, Rachel Delaney, a right-handed batter, was summoned into the Ireland Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 squad on Friday.
Delaney, 25, who has participated in 10 T20 Internationals, will board a flight to South Africa on Saturday to join the group.
With a pivotal cameo against Zimbabwe in the semifinals of the qualification tournament in Abu Dhabi, Stokell played a key role in Ireland’s advancement to the tournament. However, a week before the competition, Stokell suffered a foot ligament injury.
Her withdrawal from the competition was determined following a medical evaluation.
“We are all devastated for Rebecca and wish her a speedy recovery. Rachel Delaney has been called up — an experienced all-rounder who has been part of recent senior squads. We wish Rachel well as she flies out to join the Irish camp,” Carrie Archer, National Selector, said in a media release.
On February 13, Ireland Women’s opening ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 Group match will take place against England. Their group also includes West Indies, India, and Pakistan.
Laura Delany (captain), Georgina Dempsey, Amy Hunter, Shauna Kavanagh, Arlene Kelly, Gaby Lewis, Louise Little, Sophie MacMahon, Jane Maguire, Cara Murray, Leah Paul, Orla Prendergast, Eimear Richardson, Mary Waldron, and Rachel Delaney make up the most recent Ireland roster.
