- The German government has authorized the transfer of Leopard 1 tanks to Ukraine.
- Delivery to Ukraine could take place at any time, local German newspaper reports.
- Germany is also attempting to obtain additional ammo from Qatar.
According to a local German newspaper on Friday, the German government has authorized the transfer of Leopard 1 tanks from industrial inventories to Ukraine and is in discussions to repurchase 15 Gepard tanks from Qatar for transfer to Kyiv.
After the Leopard tanks are refurbished, the publication stated, citing government sources, that the delivery to Ukraine might take place at any time.
If Kyiv were interested in purchasing them, many Leopard 1 tanks may be supplied to Ukraine by Rheinmetall and Flensburger Fahrzeugbau Gesellschaft (FFG).
The newspaper reported that many German officials spoke with Qatar’s foreign ministry about possibly purchasing 15 Gepard tanks that Doha had purchased to protect the World Cup stadiums, and that Berlin was also attempting to obtain additional ammo from Qatar.
“The Gepards have proven themselves very well in the war in Ukraine. If we could get more from partners here, that would definitely help the Ukrainians,” new German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius was quoted as saying by the newspaper.
