Jafar Panahi, a dissident Iranian director who has been detained for the past six months, has protested in Evan’s prison by going on a hunger strike.
The Hollywood Reporter claims that Tahereh Saeidi, the wife of the No Bears director, announced the protest action on Instagram.
In a statement from his cell, the 62-year-old said, “This arrest was more comparable to banditry and hostage-taking than the carrying out of a court order.
The Caméra d’Or winner declared he would abstain from all food, liquids, and medications until he was released from custody.
“I will remain in this state until perhaps my lifeless body is freed from prison,” Panahi continued.
In the meantime, Panahi’s 2010 six-year sentence was reinstated by the Iranian government along with a 20-year travel and filming ban.
His attendance at the burial of a student died in the Green Revolution in 2009 was connected to the sentence.
