The Boogeyman’s debut trailer has arrived, showcasing director Rob Savage’s (Dashcam) vision for one of Stephen King’s most terrifying tales.
The film recently received a theatrical release after being originally ordered by 20th Century Studios for Hulu.
The first edition of the short story The Boogeyman appeared in a 1973 issue of the magazine Cavalier. The narrative is seen through the eyes of a psychiatrist who talks with a patient who says they are being pursued by a paranormal entity.
The psychiatric patient is told by the desperate man that the boogeyman cursed his family and targeted his children one by one.
The man is convinced he has found enough proof to show the boogeyman is real, even though every child’s death can be attributed to natural causes because infants can choke to death in the middle of the night.
Until the psychiatrist becomes a new target for the unsettling creature, the psychiatrist ultimately dismisses the man’s story as a fantasy.
The Boogeyman is not a direct adaptation of King’s original work, as the new trailer makes clear. Instead, the film follows the two daughters of the psychiatrist and functions as a sort of sequel.
The teenage leads of The Boogeyman, played by Sophie Thatcher (Yellowjackets) and Vivien Lyra Blair (Bird Box), are still processing their own loss at the beginning of the film.
The girls will unfortunately have to fight for their lives when their father invites the boogeyman to their house.
While the notion of a monster hiding in closets might seem silly, King turned it into a terrifying tale in 1973. The boogeyman will be depicted in a terrifying manner in the movie adaptation in order to pay homage to King’s tale, as the latest trailer makes clear.
Every year, new King adaptations come out in theatres and are broadcast on TV, but The Boogeyman’s first trailer suggests that it may be one of the scariest King adaptations ever made.
Chris Messina, David Dastmalchian, Marin Ireland, and Madison Hu are the stars of The Boogeyman. The script is written by Mark Heyman from an original draught by Scott Beck, Bryan Woods, and Akela Cooper of Malignant, so the film is in capable hands.
Shawn Levy, Dan Levine, and Dan Cohen of 21 Laps are the producers of The Boogeyman, and Scott Beck, Bryan Woods, and Emily Morris are the executive producers.
One of many King adaptations scheduled for release in 2023 and beyond is The Boogeyman. Additionally, a prequel to 2019’s Pet Sematary and a new version of the author’s vampire classic Salem’s Lot are in development.
On June 2, The Boogeyman is released in theatres.
