At the Australian Cricket Awards, which were hosted in Sydney on Monday, batters Steve Smith and Beth Mooney completed their productive years with trophies. Following a season in which she accumulated 976 runs at an average of 65.1 and a strike rate of 102.6 across three formats, Beth won her second Belinda Clark Award.
The Australian team’s 2022 Women’s ODI World Cup victory in New Zealand, when Beth struck an unbeaten 62 off 47 balls in the final, helped Beth, a 29-year-old left-handed opener, win the Women’s ODI Player of the Year award. Meg Lanning came in second with 110 votes, and Tahlia McGrath took third with 95 votes in the final Belinda Clark Medal vote count. She received 129 votes overall.
After a season in which the 33-year-old scored 1547 runs in 32 matches across all three forms at an average of 55.3, Smith joined Michael Clarke and Ricky Ponting as the only players to win the Allan Border Medal four times.
Smith amassed 863 runs at an average of 71.92 during the course of his career, more than half of which came in Test matches. In the final Allan Border Medal tally, Smith (171 votes) outpolled Travis Head (144 votes) and David Warner (141 votes).
Tahlia had an outstanding year in the shortest format, earning her the title of Women’s T20I Player of the Year. During the voting period, during which the Australian side only suffered one loss, she averaged 62.14 with the bat and just 12.84 with the ball.
After an amazing comeback for the Australian side, Usman Khawaja won the Shane Warne Men’s Test Player of the Year Award. Khawaja struck three hundreds while scoring 1020 runs during the voting period at an average of 78.46.
In addition to becoming Australia’s top run-scorer in men’s Test cricket in 2022, Khawaja received the Community Impact Award for his work off the field. The Usman Khawaja Foundation, run by the Australian opener, offers educational and cricketing opportunities to young people from underprivileged backgrounds.
After amassing 552 runs at the top of the order at a 42.5 average and hitting four half-centuries and a century in 13 games, Warner won his third Men’s ODI Player of the Year award.
The all-rounder Marcus Stoinis won the Men’s T20 International Player of the Year for the first time after striking out an astounding 168.5 times during the voting period. Stoinis scored 347 runs at a 31.6 average while also taking eight wickets.
Michael Neser of Queensland and Annabel Sutherland of Victoria won the Men’s and Women’s Domestic Player of the Year Awards, which recognise performances across all formats of cricket in Australia.
The BBL Season 12 Player of the Year Award went to Matt Short of the Adelaide Strikers, and the BBL Season 8 Player of the Year Award went to Ashleigh Gardiner of the Sydney Sixers.
