India swept the one-day international series against New Zealand with a 90-run victory in the third game on Tuesday thanks to aggressive hundreds from captain Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill.
After being given the opportunity to bat first in Indore, Rohit (101) and Gill (112) put up a 212-point partnership for the first wicket to lead the hosts to 385-9.
Devon Conway’s 138 in response was in vain as India bowled out New Zealand for 295 in 41.2 overs, a 3-0 whitewash and a move to the top of the ODI standings for them.
The opening partnership Rohit and Gill had against the Kiwis was the most by any team in the 50-over format, surpassing the 201-run partnership between Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir in 2009. Rohit, who had scored his first ODI century since January 2020, and Gill stood out.
Following the departure of the two, New Zealand’s bowlers retaliated as India dropped to 293-5 before Hardik Pandya seized control and increased the total with a 38-ball 54.
But in a 22-run eighth over, Gill destroyed Lockie Ferguson for four fours and a six, and Rohit later joined the celebration with a few powerful hits over the boundary.
In his previous four ODI innings, Gill has scored three hundred-plus runs, and when he achieved that mark, he removed his helmet and basked in the cheers of the crowd.
Despite Virat Kohli’s quick 36, India lost regular wickets when Michael Bracewell bowled Rohit and Blair Tickner returned Gill in the following over.
Ishan Kishan, a left-handed player, was run out following a mix-up with Kohli, who soon lost to Jacob Duffy.
Pandya and Shardul Thakur, who scored 25 runs, added 54 runs for the seventh wicket.
After Pandya bowled the opener for nothing in the response, New Zealand lost Finn Allen on the second delivery of their chase.
Conway, who bats left-handed, battled valiantly as wickets fell at the other end and achieved his third ODI hundred with a six off Yuzvendra Chahal’s leg-spin.
When Thakur struck again in quick succession, Mitchell was bowled behind and then skipper Tom Latham was caught at mid-off, deflating New Zealand’s chase.
Conway, who hit 12 fours and 8 sixes in his 100-ball blitz, appeared unstoppable before being caught at mid-wicket by tearaway quick Umran Malik.
Bracewell, who scored 26, and Mitchell Santner, who scored 34, made an effort to continue the battle, but the Black Caps’ demise was sealed by Bracewell’s dismissal off Kuldeep Yadav, who claimed three wickets.
Three Twenty20 international matches between the two teams will now begin on Friday in Ranchi.
