Germany won’t block export of its Leopard 2 tanks

  • Mateusz Morawiecki, the prime minister of Poland, said that the government would ask Berlin for permission.
  • Morawiecki said last week that Poland was ready to send 14 Leopard 2 tanks to Kiev.
  • Many of Germany’s allies are upset with it because it won’t send its own Leopard 2 tanks.

Germany’s foreign minister, has declared that she “would not stand in the way” if Poland transferred Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine.

Ukraine has reportedly asked the West for German-made tanks so it can better fight Russia.

Ukraine’s foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba told that Germany may “save the lives of many Ukrainian soldiers.”

However, Germany has not yet consented, and Poland has not relaxed its export regulations.

Ms. Baerbock said on Sunday that Poland had not yet asked for permission to export.

“For now, the question hasn’t been asked,” she told France’s LCI TV, “but if it were, we wouldn’t stand in the way.”

On Monday, Mateusz Morawiecki, the prime minister of Poland, said that the government would ask Berlin for permission. But he said that even if the request wasn’t granted, Poland would still send the tanks to Ukraine.

“Even if we don’t get this agreement in the end, we will still give our tanks and other tanks to Ukraine as part of a small coalition,” Mr. Morawiecki said.

Josep Borrell, who is in charge of foreign policy for the EU, said that Germany would not stop other EU countries from selling Leopard tanks.

He also said that tanks shouldn’t be the only thing talked about when talking about helping Ukraine.

In an interview on Monday, Mr. Kuleba of Ukraine asked all countries that wanted to send Leopard 2 tanks to “immediately and officially ask the German government to let these tanks be sent to Ukraine.”

“This move will make everything very clear, and we’ll see where it takes Germany from there. This needs to be done right away, and once it is, everything will be clear “he added.

On Monday, a spokesman for the German government said that no one had yet asked for permission to send the Leopard 2 tanks.

Mr. Morawiecki said last week that Poland was ready to send 14 Leopard 2 tanks to Kiev.

Marcin Przydacz, the foreign policy adviser to the Polish president, said on Monday that he liked what Ms. Baerbock said, but he would rather hear Chancellor Olaf Scholz confirm Germany’s position.

“It turns out that Poland can change Germany’s mind by talking to them and taking diplomatic steps,” Mr. Przydacz told Polish Radio.

But in the end, Warsaw wants Berlin and other NATO allies to send their own Leopard tanks because government officials admit that 14 tanks won’t do much to help Ukraine fight.

The Leopard 2 tanks were made to compete with the T-90 tanks that the Russians are using in the invasion.

People think there are more than 2,000 of them in the world, and the president of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, said that about 300 of them would help make sure Russia loses.

Many of Germany’s allies are upset with it because it won’t send its own Leopard 2 tanks.

Germany must also give permission for other countries, like Poland, to send its tanks back to Germany.

After a meeting of more than 50 allied countries on Friday, Germany had not yet agreed to send the tanks or given permission for them to leave the country. But it said it wasn’t blocking the tanks’ export on its own.

In a joint statement on Saturday, the foreign ministers of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania told Germany, “Now is the time to send Leopard tanks to Ukraine.”
