KARACHI: Prominent businessman and hotelier Byram Dinshawji Avari passed away in Karachi after a prolonged illness. He was aged 81.
The businessperson’s last rites will be performed on Monday afternoon at Khorshed Villa, inside the compound of Beach Luxury Hotel.
Byram was suffering from a prolonged illness and was being treated in a private hospital in Karachi. He left behind two sons and one daughter among his mourners.
Byram Avari was a prominent Pakistani businessman based in Karachi. He belonged to the Parsi community and owned a five-star deluxe hotel in Karachi and Lahore.
The group is also actively managing properties elsewhere in Pakistan. The Avari Group was the first Pakistani company to have obtained international hotel management contracts.
Apart from his business activities, Byram was a national-level sailor and won two Asian Games gold medals for Pakistan in 1978 (with Muneer Sadiq) and 1982 (with his wife Goshpi Avari).
Byram Avari also won a silver medal at the Enterprise World Championship held in Canada in 1978. he also served as Commodore of Karachi Yacht Club in 1976 and 1980
He received the Pride of Performance Award for Sports (Sailing) in 1982 by the President of Pakistan. He was also the Honorary Consul for Canada in Pakistan. He was Chairman of the Karachi Parsi Anjuman.
Former President Asif Ali expressed his grief over the demise of Byram Avari and offered his condolences to the bereaved family.
Zardari said Byram Awari was a successful businessman who served the country. He said Avari also won gold medal in Asian Games.
Sindh Governor Kamran Khan Tessori expressed his grief over the passing of Avari. He said Bayram Avari played a prominent role in the development of the hotel industry in the country.
Tessori said Avari brought Pakistan’s name to the international level in sailing and was at the forefront in the service of humanity. He said the void created by his demise will not be filled for a long time.
