China says 80% of population have had Covid-19

  • Covid-19 has already infected eight out of ten Chinese citizens.
  • Current “wave of epidemic has already infected nearly 80% of the people”.
  • With over 2 billion passenger trips expected to take place during that time.

Covid-19 has already infected eight out of ten Chinese citizens, according to a well-known government scientist.

On Saturday, the night of the Lunar New Year, Wu Zunyou, the director of China’s Center for Disease Control and Prevention, stated that the current “wave of epidemic has already infected nearly 80% of the people” in the nation of 1.4 billion people.

His statement was made in response to worries that the Lunar New Year travel rush, which is commonly referred to as the “world’s largest human migration,” could spread the virus to the countryside and lead to a second wave of illnesses.

Wu, however, claimed that given the size of the infection already, this eventuality was implausible in a post on his own social media account.

“In the next two to three months, the possibility of a large-scale Covid-19 rebound or a second wave of infections across the country is very small,” Wu said.

The 40-day Lunar New Year holiday will mark the first time since the pandemic’s beginning more than three years ago that there won’t be any limitations on domestic travel.

According to China’s Ministry of Transport, with over 2 billion passenger trips expected to take place during that time.

On the eve of the Lunar New Year, more than 26 million passenger rides were made, according to a report from the Chinese state broadcaster CCTV on Sunday.
