- Three-day Coronation celebration for King Charles will include a star-studded performance.
- King will be formally crowned on May 6.
- The coronation is expected to be “majestic” yet “inclusive.”
The 74-year-old King, who succeeded his mother, Queen Elizabeth, as monarch last September, will be formally crowned on May 6; details of the festivities planned for the weekend, which will unite the UK in a contemporary, multi-cultural series of celebrations, have now been unveiled.
The coronation is expected to be “majestic” yet “inclusive,” according to a source who spoke to the Sunday Telegraph newspaper. The ceremonies will reflect Britain “as it is today” while upholding the best traditions of pomp and grandeur “for which we are properly famed.”
The formal coronation ceremony at Westminster Abbey will kick off the weekend on May 6. According to Buckingham Palace, this “solemn religious service” will represent the monarch’s position both now and in the future. The Archbishop of Canterbury will officiate.
Charles and Queen Consort Camilla will make their way to the Abbey in The King’s Procession from Buckingham Palace, forgoing the customary breeches and stockings worn by his forebears in favour of military attire.
They will return to Buckingham Palace in a bigger Coronation Procession after the service, joined by other members of the royal family, and they will tardily arrive on the balcony to greet the massive crowd of supporters expected to congregate on the Mall.
On May 7, Windsor Castle will play host to a Coronation Concert where “world music icons and contemporary artists” will perform for thousands of members of the public, volunteers from the organisations the King and Queen Consort support, and applicants for pairs of free tickets in a nationwide ballot.
