• WhatsApp has been fined €5.5 million by Ireland’s DPC for violating the GDPR.

WhatsApp’s platform has been fined a whopping €5.5 million for GDPR violations. The incident occurred when a user in Germany filed a complaint with Ireland’s Data Protection Commission.

This fine for Meta comes just a few weeks after the same governing authority slapped the business with another 390 million Euro fine.

It went on to explain how WhatsApp was struggling to meet the GDPR’s criteria and hence needed to work hard.

The timescale allocated included six months because this was the associated time frame to remedy any faults, and failure to do so could result in a penalty.

According to the complainant, the app requires its users to enter into a data processing agreement if they want to continue using its services.

According to the complainant, this is a major violation of GDPR rules. As per the latter, each user has the right to choose which data should be handled.

To reach this conclusion, the DPC had to resolve some serious differences with the relevant authorities.

The general agreement was that Meta should be severely punished, and the DPC has been called to take the inquiry to the next level.

Meanwhile, the Independent reports that Facebook’s parent company would not accept any fine without a fight and that it intends to appeal such a judgment.

WhatsApp is presently processing all of its activities to evaluate whether or not it can process data that falls under the “special category” heading.

This includes processing data for purposes such as behavioral advertising and marketing, as well as offering insights in the form of statistics to various third parties.
