- The late David Crosby, who died Thursday at the age of 81.
- Made headlines not only for his music.
- But for his role in biologically fathering fellow musician Melissa Etheridge’s elder two children.
David Crosby, Stills & Nash singer provided sperm for Etheridge and her then-partner Julie Cypher’s children — Bailey, 25, and Beckett, who died from opioid addiction at age 21 in 2020.
Etheridge revealed via Rolling Stone in early 2000 that Crosby was, indeed the donor for her and Cypher’s kids. She and Crosby, accompanied by their respective spouses, clarified their decision and path to collaboration in a subsequent TV interview with CNN’s Larry King Live.
When King inquired about Etheridge and Cypher’s friendship with Crosby in the past, Etheridge responded, “I would never collaborated with him. I had performed some charity work with him and shared a platform with him. I also highly admired him.”
They had “been talking about [family planning] for a long time, how we wanted to accomplish it,” Cypher continued, adding that things “unexpectedly fell into place” while they were travelling to Hawaii at the same time as the Crosby family.
Crosby’s wife Jan really made the notion that her husband might be a possible donor in the end.
Their 8-month-old baby was there and asleep on Jan’s chest when Cypher and I visited the place where they were residing, Cypher recalled. “Jan simply blurted it out while we were discussing having kids and how we were going to do it. She was the one who offered David’s services. What about David, she questioned?”
Crosby told King, “We had not been very close friends of Julie and Melissa’s. But I believe that by now, simply by spending time with them, you can see who they are pretty clearly and immediately. They are good people, and they made us feel that way very quickly and effortlessly. I liked them right away.
“He gave me my family as a gift. He, [son] Django, and [wife] Jan have and will always have my gratitude. Many future generations will be inspired by his music and legacy. indeed a gem, “She composed.
His wife informed Variety of Crosby’s passing in a statement. After a protracted illness, our dear David (Croz) Crosby has died away, she remarked with deep regret.

After the passing of her son Beckett, Melissa Etheridge said, “My heart is broken “His soul mate Jan, his wife, and their son Django were all around him with love. Even though he is no longer among us, his kindness and humanity will serve as a constant example for us. Through his iconic songs, he will continue to leave a lasting legacy.”
She concluded, “Peace, love, and harmony to all who knew David and those he touched. We will miss him dearly. At this time, we respectfully and kindly ask for privacy as we grieve and try to deal with our profound loss. Thank you for the love and prayers.”
