Rishi Sunak was fined because he didn’t wear a seatbelt while making a social media video.

Lancashire Police said that they had given a 42-year-old man from London an offer of a fixed penalty with certain conditions.

No. 10 said that Mr. Sunak “fully accepts that this was a mistake and has apologised,” adding that he would pay the fine.

When a seat belt is available, a passenger who doesn’t use it can be fined £100.

If the case goes to court, this can go up to £500.

When the video was made, the prime minister was in Lancashire, which is in the north of England.

Mr. Sunak’s Instagram video promoted the government’s latest “levelling up” investment.

Labour deputy leader Angela Rayner called Mr. Sunak a “complete liability” in a tweet.

A Labour Party spokeswoman said that Rishi Sunak’s leveling-up photo op had backfired.

“He showed the same lack of respect for the laws as Boris Johnson,” the Liberal Democrats said of the second prime minister to receive a police ticket.

“From partygate to seatbelt gate, these Conservative politicians clearly believe the British people are stupid,” said Lib Dem vice leader Daisy Cooper.

“As long as they act like there are different rules for them and everyone else, this fine is a warning that the Conservatives will finally get what they deserve.”

Earlier, Conservative MP for Blackpool South Scott Benton said Lancashire Police’s investigation was pointless.

“Most people would consider that complaining about a seatbelt for political reasons is not a wise use of frontline resources,” he said.

In cars, vans, and other goods vehicles with seatbelts, those over 14 must wear them. Drivers are liable for under-14s.

Police, fire, and rescue vehicles and medical notes are exempt.
