Small Axe and Triangle of Sadness have been added to The Criterion Collection, whose goal is to publish “essential classic and contemporary films from throughout the world in editions that offer the greatest technical quality and award-winning, original additions.” Pre-orders for the two upcoming movies are presently being accepted.

Ruben Stlund’s film Triangle of Sadness is a satire on our culture’s obsession with wealth, beauty, privilege, and status. A model-influencer pair, played by Harris Dickinson and Charlbi Dean, are invited to join other people of their calibre on an all-expenses-paid vacation, but something happens that turns everyone’s plans upside down. The skin between the brows, which models utilize to express emotion or use Botox to stifle emotion, gets its name from the movie. No one can escape the inevitable events of life, regardless of how they choose to express or repress their emotions. All of us are in the same boat.

A collection of five movies, Mangrove, Lovers Rock, Red, White and Blue, Alex Wheatle, and Education, under the direction of Sir Steve Rodney McQueen, first aired on BBC One in 2020. Each movie takes a distinct approach and provides a detailed insight at West Indian life in London throughout the 1960s to 1980s, a period marked by panic, police brutality, the discovery of one’s political identity, and the escape into the vivid and colorful reggae scene. Why then is it called Small Axe? It is related to a Bob Marley song of the same name, in which it is stated that a giant tree may be destroyed by repeatedly using a little axe and that even the tiniest actions can have a significant impact.

Each release’s special features have been approved by the director and include high-definition remasters or 4K digital masters of the movies, discussions and interviews, special features, trailers, and English subtitles. Two featurettes regarding the special effects and a day on the set are included in Triangle of Sadness. On the other side, Small Axe features discussions between McQueen and Paul Gilroy, a documentary on the 1981 New Cross home fire, audio interviews with McQueen, Dennis Bovell, and Mike D of the Beastie Boys, as well as a piece by film critic and programmer Ashley Clark.
