After Suzanne Bonamici and her husband Simon were briefly hospitalised on Friday night after being hit by a car in Portland. Rep. Suzanne Bonamici is expressing her gratitude to first responders and moving forward with her recovery.
“Thank you to everyone for your well wishes, and to the first responders and health care workers who provided the care we needed,” Bonamici tweeted Sunday evening. “My husband and I are continuing to recover at home, and are grateful for your kind thoughts and support.”
Natalie Crofts, a representative for Bonamici, verified the incident on Twitter on Saturday, stating that it happened as they were leaving an event and “going crossing a street in a crosswalk.”
“The Congresswoman is expected to make a full recovery, but will be unable to attend the town hall meetings in Clatsop and Tillamook Counties today and other public events while she heals,” her spokesperson added.
Th Oregon Democrat, 68, was “treated for a concussion and laceration to her head,” while Simon, 66, was “treated for minor injuries,” before being released from the hospital to recover at home, according to Crofts.
A driver “rolled into Bonamici and her husband at low speed and knocked them down,” according to Portland police, according to NBC News. The woman cooperated with authorities and gave no indication that she was impaired. Following the event, authorities told the publication that no one was detained or penalised.
In 2012, a special election was held, and Bonamici was chosen to succeed Democrat David Wu. She defeated Republican challenger Chris Mann to win reelection as the 1st District representative for Oregon.
