UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak informed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy that the UK had “ambition” to provide Challenger 2 tanks to Ukraine, according to Downing Street.
During a call with Zelenskyy, Sunak “outlined the UK’s ambition to intensify our support to Ukraine, including through the provision of Challenger 2 tanks & additional artillery systems,” according to a Downing Street readout.
In a post on his official Telegram channel Saturday, Zelenskyy said he thanked Sunak “for the decisions that will not only strengthen us on the battlefield, but also send the right signal to other partners.”
This week saw a boost to the Western alliance’s response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine as several European nations for the first time heeded Zelenskyy‘s repeated demand to Kyiv for the provision of contemporary battle tanks.
Poland and France have promised to provide tanks shortly so that the Ukrainian military might use them to defend itself against Russia. Finland is contemplating doing the same.
