Alexei Navalny: Concern for the health of imprisoned Putin critic

  • In a prison colony more than 250 kilometres Navalny is being kept.
  • Navalny said that prison officials were denying him access to essential medication.
  • He received a two and a half year sentence.

A previous open letter to President Vladimir Putin from over 500 Russian doctors demanded that Navalny’s treatment in prison stop being “abused.”

Navalny’s attorney claimed that despite having since seen a doctor, he was still not getting the medication he required.

Navalny said that prison officials were denying him access to essential medication.

Navalny “is in urgent need of medical help, as multiple Russian doctors have pointed out,” a representative for the German ministry stated.

According to spokeswoman Christiane Hoffmann, “We call on the Russian authorities to give this swiftly and thoroughly.”

According to Navalny’s attorney Vadim Kobzev, the anti-corruption activist has been confined to an isolation cell while experiencing chills, fever, a terrible cough, and a low body temperature.

Berlin pushed for Navalny’s release as well, claiming that his detention was the result of a “politically motivated verdict”.

He has been detained for two years, frequently in isolation. He was detained in January 2021 after arriving in Germany from receiving treatment there for a Siberian nerve agent attack.

The doctors said in the open letter that they had “grave fears for Navalny’s life and health” and that the Russian prison service’s reluctance to give him the required medications “is directly jeopardising” his life.

They insisted that he not be kept in solitary confinement any longer and that he be given access to civilian doctors. The letter stated, “We demand an end to the abuse of Alexei Navalny.

The letter seems to have had an effect, according to Vadim Kobzev, as Navalny received antibiotics and his condition seemed to stabilise on Thursday.

On Friday, Mr. Kobzev said that Navalny had gotten a medical checkup from the director of a tuberculosis hospital, but he added that Navalny had not yet been given the necessary medication.

John Kirby, a representative of the US National Security Council, stated on Thursday that the US agreed with the physicians’ concerns and thought Navalny “should be quickly released” and get “appropriate medical care.”

Navalny claims that the jail staff used another prisoner as a biological weapon to infect him with the virus. He claimed that on December 31, he was moved to a punishment cell for the tenth time since being imprisoned.

In a prison colony more than 250 kilometres (150 miles) east of Moscow, Navalny is being kept.

He received a two and a half year sentence at first for violating the terms of his bail while receiving treatment in a German hospital, but was then given an additional nine years for fraud and contempt of court.
