Cusco international airport closes again amid protests

  • Cusco international airport was shut down on Thursday.
  • The entryway to Machu Picchu is Cusco, the former capital of the Inca empire.
  • Protests have been directed toward a number of Peruvian airports.

The Cusco international airport was shut down on Thursday, according to the transportation ministry, as anti-government demonstrations spread throughout the area.

The entryway to Machu Picchu, a mountaintop royal retreat and one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, is Cusco, the former capital of the Inca empire.

“This action is being taken to safeguard peoples’ wellbeing and the safety of aeronautical operations,” the ministry said in a statement.

Additionally, protests last month forced the airport to cancel flights for a number of days.

Protests that started in early December after President Pedro Castillo’s resignation have been directed toward a number of Peruvian airports.
