Golden Globes viewers reach a record low: “go woke, go broke”

The 2023 Golden Globes returned to NBC with one of the lowest ratings in the network’s history after criticism of the programme for being too “woke.”

The Hollywood Reporter reports that the average number of viewers for the show was 6.25 million, down 10% from the ceremony in 2021 when there were 6.91 million viewers.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association incident, which overshadowed the previous year’s awards, forced NBC to decide against airing the event.

The 2021 show, which was hosted by Amy Poehler and Tina Fey, was broadcast remotely in a mostly empty ballroom.

It is important to note that in 2008, following the writers’ strike, the HFPA presented the winners via a broadcast news conference rather than the customary ceremony, which resulted in the lowest NBC rating. There were almost 6 million watchers of the programme.

The award show was however defended by NBC, who claimed that it was the “most social special event across all television season-to-date (linear and streaming), both in terms of social engagements and social video views.”

One user commented, “Go woke, go broke. Golden Globes TV Ratings:

2004: 26.8 million viewers

2014: 20.9 million viewers

2015: 19.3 million viewers

2016: 18.5 million viewers

2020: 18.4 million viewers

2022: 6.9 million viewers

2023: 6.3 million viewers (lowest ever)”

While another wrote, “Viewers slam #GoldenGlobes as ‘#woke’ as award ceremony returns’. Go woke go broke. Time to end the Golden Globes and all #Hollywood award shows.”
