The southern Chinese city of Guangzhou state media reported that a car sped past pedestrians at a junction on Wednesday night, causing at least five deaths and 13 injuries.
Social media videos appeared to show the vehicle, a black SUV, ramming into pedestrians at two different crossings in a bustling, upscale commercial area of the city of 19 million people.
Another internet video that has been reported by state media purports to show the driver pulling over to the side of the road and throwing handfuls of cash out of his car.
Local authorities said police had “controlled” the driver, a 22-year-old man from Guangdong province, and further investigation was underway.
The incident happened at 5:25 p.m. during rush hour when there were many scooters, cars, and pedestrians on the road.
According to local officials, who also confirmed the casualty figures, police and medical personnel were quickly dispatched.
According to an eyewitness quoted in a report by the state-run China News Service, the vehicle slammed into pedestrians at the intersection without pausing.
Despite the fact that the incident was reported by China’s official media, it was not among the top trending topics on the country’s tightly regulated social media platform Weibo on Thursday morning.
