Experts question credibility of Prince Harry memoir ‘Spare’

  • Prince Harry’s autobiography Spare has already raised questions over its accuracy.
  • Prince Harry claims he was at Eton when he learned of the Queen Mother’s death.
  • Prince Harry was skiing with his father and brother in Switzerland in 2002.

The accuracy of a number of claims in Prince Harry‘s autobiography Spare, including one about the Queen Mother’s passing, has already been called into question.

According to OK! Magazine, Prince Harry stated in his memoir that he was at Eton when he learnt that the Queen Mother had passed away in March 2002.

The Duke of Sussex stated in his book:  “At Eton, while studying, I took a call… I recall that it was just before Easter, the weather was bright and warm, light slanting through my window, filled with vivid colours. Your Royal Highness, the Queen Mother has died.”

However, according to stories from the time, Prince Harry, who was 17 at the time, was not in the UK when the Queen Mother passed away; instead, he was in Switzerland skiing with his father, King Charles, and brother, Prince William.

According to a News article from the period in 2002, “William and Harry [were] away skiing in Klosters when the 101-year-old died in her sleep.”

Richard Fitzwilliam, a royal specialist, commented on this : “This is a serious error in a hugely controversial book. That Harry is clearly wrong in his recollection of the facts as to where he was when the Queen Mother died leaves doubt as to how closely this book has been fact-checked.

Fitzwilliam added, “One wonders how many other factual errors are to be found within its pages.”
