A suspect had been detained in relation to the death of a well-known Kenyan activist for LGBTQ rights, whose body was discovered in the west of the nation put inside a metal box, Kenyan police announced on Friday.
The package was dumped by the side of the road from a car with a hidden number plate, and motorbike taxi riders noticed it and called the police, according to reports in a newspapers, which cited police sources.
According to the Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC), an impartial rights organization, the activist Edwin Chiloba’s bones were discovered on Tuesday in the vicinity of Eldoret town in Uasin Gishu county, where he operated his fashion company.
According to research, homosexuality is slowly becoming more accepted in Kenya, although for many people it is still a taboo topic.
In recent years, the country’s film board has outlawed two movies for their depictions of LGBT lives.
Several human rights organizations, including the Kenyan chapter of the International Commission of Jurists, condemned the death and demanded that the perpetrators of the crime be promptly investigated and apprehended.
“Chiloba’s death is a tragedy and an affront to human dignity and violation of the right to life #JusticeForChiloba,” it said on Twitter.
One person has been detained in connection with the death of Chiloba, according to Kenya National Police Service spokesperson Resila Onyango.
“Police arrested one male suspect in Eldoret on Friday. He is the main suspect but the matter is still under investigation,” she said in a text message to Reuters.

“Words cannot even explain how we as a community are feeling right now. Edwin Chiloba was a fighter, fighting relentlessly to change the hearts and minds of society when it came to LGBTQ+ lives,” GALCK, a Kenyan gay rights group, said on Twitter.
Gay sex in Kenya is illegal and carries a 14-year prison sentence under a legislation from the British colonial era. Discrimination is widespread, although it is infrequently enforced.
